Explanation: Sixth, the assembly of laymen of the seven worthies. Within this there are four parts: first, indicating the number and identifying the category; second, generally indicating the endowment of virtues; third, specifically praising their virtues; fourth, summarizing their virtues. This is the first. The *Original Record* says: "Possessing the seven treasures of worthies, but not yet having attained the Dharma-eye, they constantly take delight in household life; hence they are called 'laymen of the seven worthies' (the *Benye jing* says faith, giving, morality, learning, wisdom, conscience, and shame are called the seven treasures of worthies)." Now, our interpretation: The seven worthies reside in the seven expedients. They are worthies and not nobles, because they lack the noble path; hence they are called 'laymen of the seven worthies'. As for the seven expedients: first, the contemplation of the fivefold stilling of the mind; second, the contemplation of mindfulness on specific characteristics; third, the contemplation of mindfulness on general characteristics; fourth, heat; fifth, summit; sixth, patience; seventh, worldly supreme dharmas; the meaning is as in the separate chapter.
