The phrase "eight liberations" refers to the fourth virtue, that of liberation: (1) internally having form, one observes forms; (2) internally lacking form, one observes external forms; (3) the pure liberation, fully dwelling [therein]; (4) entering the base of infinite space; (5) entering the base of infinite consciousness; (6) entering the base of nothingness; (7) entering the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception; (8) entering the liberation of the cessation of perception and feeling. The detailed account is as given there, and the summary is as given above. However, with respect to these eight kinds, various explanations differ. According to the Sarvāstivāda school, as stated in the Vibhāṣā, the first three are non-greed, because they counteract greed, along with their associated and accompanying [dharmas]. If belonging to the desire realm, they have the four aggregates as their nature; if belonging to the form realm, they possess the five aggregates; the four formless-base liberations have the four aggregates as their nature; the eighth liberation is subsumed under the non-associated aggregate of conditioning factors. According to the Sautrāntika school, master [Śrīlāta] has two explanations: one says that all take wisdom as their essence; another says that the first seven are wisdom, while the eighth liberation takes the two kinds of nirvāṇa—with residue and without residue—as its intrinsic nature. Now according to the Mahāyāna, the first three take the four aggregates and five aggregates as their intrinsic nature; the next four, the four aggregates; and the eighth liberation takes the non-associated conditioning factors that are neither form nor mind as its intrinsic nature.
