Commentary: The second [part], the time and season of manifesting omens. This is the eighth day of the first month in the thirtieth year after the Tathāgata's attainment of bodhi, or perhaps precisely the time of expounding [the sūtra]. Some say: According to Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha's intention, the Tathāgata was in the world for forty-five years and turned the Dharma wheel of the three vehicles: 1. The turning wheel of the Dharma, because it expounded the Hīnayāna. However, turning has both explicit and esoteric aspects: esoterically, from the night of attaining the path up to the night of nirvāṇa, he only fully turned the three Dharma wheels; explicitly, for seven years from his initial attainment of bodhi, he only turned the turning wheel of the Dharma. Next, in the thirty-one years following those seven years, he turned the illumination wheel of the Dharma concurrently. From thirty-eight years onward, during seven years, he turned the planting wheel of the Dharma. From the initial illumination up to the turning and governing, there are thirty-one years in total. During the preceding twenty-nine years he had already expounded the other *Prajñā* [sūtras]; now, arriving at the eighth day of the initial month of the thirtieth year, he only then expounded the *Benevolent Kings Prajñā*; hence it says 'in the initial year, month, eighth day.' Therefore, the present *Benji* states: 'The words "in the initial year, month, eighth day" mean precisely the eighth day of the first month. Seven years after the Tathāgata attained bodhi, he expounded the Prajñā.' Examining this sūtra text, twenty-nine years had already passed; by this time it should be thirty-six years after his attainment of bodhi. This is the meaning of the *Benji*, the sense of which is as noted above.
