Explanation: Fourth, entering the Great Tranquil Chamber. As for the word "samādhi", it is an erroneous abbreviation; according to the correct Sanskrit phonetics it is called samādhi, translated here as "equipoise" (等持). Being free from laxity and agitation, it is called "equi-" (等); maintaining the mind so that it abides in one-pointedness, it is called "-poise" (持). This applies generally to both concentrated and dispersed states, and its substance is precisely the mental factor of concentration (samādhi) among the specific [mental factors]. As for having the samādhi of the Great Tranquil Chamber, there are naturally two explanations: One says: the emptiness-nature of tathatā, being that upon which calm abiding (śamatha) and special insight (vipaśyanā) rely, is called the "Great Tranquil Chamber." Taking its name from the cognitive object, it is therefore called the "Great Tranquil Chamber"; [in combination with] "samādhi", this is a tatpuruṣa compound. The other says: the absorption is exceedingly tranquil and is that upon which wisdom relies, so it is called the "Great Tranquil Chamber Samādhi"; that is a karmadhāraya compound. These two above are the superior conditions for manifesting the auspicious signs. Furthermore, in explaining this absorption, there are three distinctions: First, it is called samādhi, as explained before. Second, it is called samāpatti, translated here as "meditative attainment" (等至). The meaning of "equi-" is as before; "attainment" refers to reaching the utmost, meaning that that tranquility reaches the utmost point. Third, it is called the stage of samāhita, translated here as "equipoised state" (等引). The meaning of "equi-" is as explained before. "Poised" (引, leading/producing) has three meanings: first, being balanced, it can lead [to spiritual qualities]; second, or it leads to balance; third, or it is that which is led forth and produced by balance. However, these three absorptions each have their broad and narrow scopes. The name samādhi, being the single dharma of equipoise among the mental factors, subsumes everything; within states with mind, it is mental one-pointedness, covering both concentrated and dispersed states. Samāpatti generally designates all the actual substances of absorption within all meditative states, whether with mind or without mind. The name of the stage of samāhita generally designates all the merits of the meditative state, whether with mind or without mind.
