1.23

言如是我聞者，即是第一總顯已聞。釋有三義：一者總釋如是我聞、二者別釋如是我聞、三者申其合說之意。言總釋者，謂傳佛教曼殊室利及阿難等皆作此言，如是所說甚深句義，我昔曾聞。

Regarding 'Thus have I heard': this is the first, comprehensively indicating what was already heard. There are three senses in interpreting it: first, comprehensively interpreting 'Thus have I heard'; second, specifically interpreting 'Thus have I heard'; third, setting forth the purpose of stating them together. Regarding the comprehensive interpretation: it means that those who transmitted the Buddha's teaching, such as Mañjuśrī and Ānanda, all made this statement: 'The profound phrases and meanings thus spoken, I formerly heard.'
