Explanation: Second, the further explanation through question and answer. The text has three divisions: first, explaining the prajñā of the true mark; next, from 'addressed the Buddha, saying' below, explaining the prajñā of contemplation; finally, from 'the names, meanings, and phrases of this sūtra' below, praising the prajñā of written words. Within [the prajñā of] the true mark, there is first the question and then the answer. This is the question. The question has three intentions: first, apprehending what was said above, namely, if all dharmas are empty like that; next, raising the matter of transformation, namely protecting and transforming sentient beings; finally, formulating the actual objection, namely, if all are empty, how can there be a bodhisattva who transforms sentient beings? If we follow the *Original Record*, the explanation of the objection's intent states: If one contemplates emptiness, then one cannot transform; if one speaks of transforming, then one does not contemplate emptiness. The two meanings are contradictory; how can transformation be accomplished?
