將欲釋經，四門分別：一說經之意及釋題目；二辨所詮宗、能詮教體；三顯教所依、所為有情；四翻譯時代、依文正釋。

Intending to explain the sūtra, there are four gates of distinction: first, the intention in speaking the sūtra and an explanation of its title; second, discerning the signified central theme and the signifier teaching-essence; third, revealing that upon which the teaching relies and the sentient beings for whose sake it is given; fourth, the period of translation and the direct explanation according to the text.
