Commentary: Second, the unsurpassable faithful reception; this is a comparative evaluation praising its superiority. The phrase "in three-thousand great-thousand lands as numerous as the sands of the Ganges" refers to the place where treasures are contained. One Mount Sumeru and so forth, multiplied up to a thousand, is called a small-thousand [world]. This small-thousand [world], multiplied up to a thousand, is called a medium-thousand [world]. This medium-thousand [world], multiplied up to a thousand, is called a great-thousand [world]. The Dazhidulun states: "Multiplying by a thousand occurs three times, hence it is called three-thousand. Because three-thousand is a triple count, it is called a great-thousand [world]." For an extensive distinction, see the Commentary on the Saṃdhinirmocana-sūtra. The previous giving of the seven treasures and the like causes one to attain the seven worthies, such as those practicing with faith, and the four fruits, such as stream-enterer; because it does not speak of emptiness, its merit is small. This sūtra speaks of emptiness and causes sentient beings to attain great bodhi, hence we know it is superior.
