Explanation: Second, the assembly of the time attained benefit. If we rely on the Former Record, there are two kinds of benefits. First, the Hīnayāna benefit, meaning that they all attained the purity of the Dharma-eye, meaning that they had already seen the truths. Second, the Mahāyāna benefits, of which there are four: 1. the stage of nature (xingdi), the stage of possessing the nature before the ten faiths; 2. attaining the stage of faith, which is the ten faiths; 3. above the ten understandings (shijie), which is called the 'great emptiness' because they first attain the understanding of emptiness; 4. above the ten dedications (shihuixiang), which is called the 'great practice' because they practice the paramārtha-satya. Now, 'purity of the Dharma-eye' is the same as in the Former Record. Second, 'the stage of nature' refers to the three stages of worthies before the bhūmis, because of the three natures of habit-nature, innate nature, and path-nature. Third, 'the stage of faith' refers to the first bhūmi and above, because they have already attained undefiled, indestructible faith. Fourth, 'the great emptiness' refers to the eighth-bhūmi bodhisattvas, because their wisdom contemplating the two emptinesses never regresses. Fifth, 'the great practice' refers to the ninth bhūmi and above, because of benefiting others. The agreements and divergences among the various explanations cannot be related in detail.
