Explanation: Second is discerning the assembly of pratyekabuddhas. There are three parts within this: first, indicating the number and distinguishing the category; next, praising their merits; finally, summarizing their merits. This is the first. "Eight hundred trillion" presents the total number. "Great seer pratyekabuddhas" manifests the differentiation of category. According to the Original Notes: "Awakening spontaneously and clearly, they are called great seers." The present interpretation: "Seers" are those who always delight in quiescence, like those residing in the mountains; hence they are called great seers. Therefore the Yogācārabhūmi explains: "Always delighting in quiescence, they do not wish to live mingled together. Awakening alone without a teacher, they are called solitary-awakened ones (pratyekabuddhas)." However, there are three kinds of such seers: first, buddhas; second, solitary-awakened ones; third, those of the five superknowledges, as in fascicle 183 of the Mahāvibhāṣā. Here, in contrast to those of the five superknowledges, they are called great seers.
