Explanation: Third, citing the ancient to verify the present. If relying on the Original Commentary, "severing the three realms" means eliminating the six consciousnesses, which is called the truth of karma. "Severing afflictions" refers to the ādāna, which is the seventh consciousness. Stating that "afflictions are purified and retribution is exhausted" means eliminating the ālaya, which is the eighth consciousness, spoken of as the purification of the fruit. Purifying these three in this way is named "buddha." Self-nature purity is named the "nature of sarvajña." The intention here is to say: when all sentient beings have these three kinds of purification, they are called buddhas. From this it should be known that even if one attains the fruit of buddhahood, one does not leave the three realms.
