Commentary: Seventh, the explanation of the stage of Far-Reaching. It also has five phrases. As for 'expedient knowledge and vow knowledge': not abandoning sentient beings and giving rise to the selflessness of dharmas is called expedient knowledge. Through the power of expedients, being able to perform the seven gates of gathering sentient beings, and through the power of vows taking birth to constantly serve as a leader, is called vow knowledge. This vow knowledge is subsumed under the first gate of expedient knowledge, not the expedients and vows among the ten pāramitās. Regarding the seven gates: first, taking birth through the power of vows in order to teach and transform other sentient beings; second, explaining antidotes in order to eliminate the defilement of afflictions and secondary afflictions, causing them to be tranquil; third, in order to eliminate all obstacles; fourth, assembling in assemblies of the Great Dharma; fifth, causing [beings] to generate merit through seeing, hearing, drawing near to, making offerings to, and cultivating with [them]; sixth, turning the wheel of the Dharma; seventh, skillfully resolving what is questioned. These are explained in full in the ninth fascicle of the Daśabhūmika-śāstra.
