Commentary: Second, this reveals the specific practice of the bhūmi. Relying on Paramārtha's explanation, one dually contemplates two meanings: first, entering contemplation and seeing the ultimate; second, emerging from contemplation and seeing the conventional. Because entering and emerging are spoken of together, it is called "dual contemplation." The Tripiṭaka Master of Ci'en [says that] taking both as objects simultaneously is named "dual contemplation." However, this dual contemplation generally has four kinds: 1. Dual contemplation by skillful means: in the ten dedications, the stage of the four wholesome roots in a single ksana takes the names and meanings as objects, as provisionally existent and truly non-existent—provisional existence is the conventional, and true non-existence is the ultimate. In practicing this initially, there may be succession; but in the thoroughly matured stage, one immediately attains dual contemplation. 2. Dual contemplation of the realization stage, as in this sūtra. 3. Dual contemplation with effort, which refers to the Difficult to Conquer Stage. 4. Spontaneous dual contemplation, from the eighth bhūmi upward. Now in this context, it is dual contemplation of the realization stage.
