Explanation: Second, the three wholesome roots sever anger, greed, and delusion. This explains that the three kinds of wholesome roots cause the mind to stop and abide in three kinds of objects, and hence are called three mind-stoppings. Benevolence is non-anger, giving is non-greed, and wisdom is non-delusion; in this order they eliminate anger, greed, and delusion. In the Sarvāstivāda school, the meaning is as stated above. Now relying on the Mahāyāna, there are naturally two explanations. One says: the same as the Sarvāstivāda, the wholesome root of non-delusion takes wisdom as its substance. The other says: apart from wisdom there is separately non-delusion, as in the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi and other texts. Now this sūtra text agrees with the Sarvāstivāda in taking wisdom as its substance.
