Commentary: Third, explaining the designation of names. The text has two distinct parts: first, explaining that there were no names before the Buddha; later, from “Great King...” downward, explaining the Tathāgata's establishing of names. In the former, there are three parts: first, explaining that conventional truth had no names or meaningful names; next, explaining that illusory dharmas have no names and no substance; later, explaining that the three realms and six destinies all have no names. This is the first. This means that “the dharmas of the illusory truth” is precisely conventional truth. The statement “before the appearance of a buddha in the world” and so forth means that when a buddha had not yet appeared, there were no names that could be spoken, nor were there names with meaning to be spoken.
