釋曰：第三、染淨相對以釋一義。文別有三：初標、次徵、後釋。此即初也。染謂煩惱，是生死根本。淨謂菩提，為涅槃本。如斯二種，用空為性，以未悟時，迷菩提性，故為煩惱；至已悟時，覺煩惱性，即是菩提。

Explanation: Third, explaining the meaning of oneness by contrasting defilement and purity. The text has three distinct parts: first, stating the thesis; next, questioning; thereafter, explaining. This is the first. Defilement refers to kleśas, which are the root of saṃsāra. Purity refers to bodhi, which is the root of nirvāṇa. These two kinds take emptiness as their nature: because when one is not yet awakened, one is deluded about the nature of bodhi, they therefore constitute defilements; when one has awakened, one realizes the nature of defilements, which is bodhi itself.
