Exposition: Third, questions and answers distinguishing the non-duality of the Dharma gate. According to the Original Commentary, the text has three parts: first, directly clarifying the non-duality of the Dharma gate; second, praising the virtues of the sūtra; third, establishing the name of the sūtra. Within the first section, there is first the question and then the answer. This is the king's question. There are three questions: first, asking about the faculties—faculties are of two kinds: buddha-nature as the faculty, and the faculties within the Path; second, asking about practice, namely the eighty-four thousand gates of aggregates, sense bases, and so forth; third, asking about the Dharma gate—there are two: expedient Dharma gates, cultivated and learned immeasurably according to the capacities of sentient beings, and the true Dharma gate, constantly cultivated as neither one nor two. The first asks about principle, the second asks about practice, and the third asks about teaching. Now it is explained: it is not so. Within the five sections of this chapter, this is the third: questions and answers distinguishing the number of Dharma gates. The text has two parts: first the question, then the answer. This is the question. The king asks: with definite, wrong, or right determinations and so forth, there are immeasurable types; sentient beings have sharp and dull faculties, so faculties are immeasurable; or with greed, pride, or confusion regarding the aggregates and so forth, there are immeasurable mental practices—for their sake, are the contemplation gates of all phenomena taught as one, as two, or as immeasurable?
