Question: When they contemplate together at this stage, is there superiority and inferiority or not? If there is superiority and inferiority, why does the Benye jing call it equal enlightenment? If there is no superiority and inferiority, how can the Yogācārabhūmi give eight further explanations of the distinction between superiority and inferiority? Answer: The various explanations differ. One says: With respect to conditioning the ultimate, there is neither superiority nor inferiority; if conditioning conventional realms, superiority and inferiority differ. Therefore, the sūtra and the treatise do not contradict each other. Another says: In reality, superiority and inferiority differ. Thus the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] says: "Bodhisattvas of the ten bhūmis see buddha-nature by hearing, while at the Tathāgata stage one sees buddha-nature with the eye." It is explained in full there. Furthermore, the Yogācārabhūmi, fascicles fourteen and fifteen, says: "The moonlight seen is an analogy for the two stages; hence we know that between the two stages there is definitely superiority and inferiority." As for saying "equal," it is because they equally sever the same obstacle that it is called "equal." Tripiṭaka Master Ci'en favored following this latter explanation.
