Commentary: Fourth, the period of entry into the stage. In Sanskrit, asaṃkhyeya-kalpa; here rendered as "incalculable kalpas." Because the count of days, months, and years cannot be reckoned, it is called asaṃkhyeya. Or, it is because kalpas such as the three disasters cannot be reckoned. Further, in both the Great and Lesser Vehicle schools, three great asaṃkhyeyas are called asaṃkhyeya. Here, it is based on the count of days, months, and years, not on the three disasters and the like. As for the "saṃgata stage," tradition explains it as the nature-gotra, or as "freedom from attachment," meaning realizing the emptiness of the person and not clinging to a self, sentient beings, and so forth. The intended meaning is: practicing the habituation-patience for one asaṃkhyeya, one first enters the nature-gotra.
