Commentary: Fourth, refining contemplation. "Having no determinate characteristics" generally indicates that self and dharmas lack determinate characteristics. "Because they have neither self-characteristic nor other-characteristic" specifically explains that self and dharmas have no self- or other-characteristics. Here there are two explanations. One says: "no self-characteristic" reveals the absence of a characteristic of a self; "no other-characteristic" reveals the absence of a characteristic of dharmas. Another says: "no self-characteristic" means having no characteristic of personal self or dharma self; "no other-characteristic" means having no characteristics of the two types of what belongs to a self, for both personal self and dharma self. As for the "door of cultivating and protecting contemplation," with respect to the contemplative doors above, what has not yet been attained is called "cultivation," and what has already been attained is called "protection." The meaning of the text above is difficult to comprehend. There are various divergent accounts; fearing prolixity, I shall not elaborate.
