Commentary: Third, the non-analytical-cessation unconditioned (apratisaṃkhyā-nirodha). When abiding in the first, lower patience within faith-patience, one permanently severs all discriminative afflictions; therefore, with respect to immeasurable future dharmas, one attains non-analytical cessation, the signless unconditioned. This has three names: first, non-analytical cessation; second, cessation without mental deliberation; and third, cessation without wisdom, which can be understood by analogy with the above. However, concerning the difference between these two cessations: in the Sarvāstivāda school, severing hindrances by means of wisdom is called analytical cessation, while cessation not by means of wisdom is called non-analytical cessation. According to the Sautrāntika school, severance by contaminated wisdom is called non-analytical cessation, and severance by uncontaminated wisdom is called analytical cessation. Now, according to the Mahāyāna, it largely agrees with the Sautrāntika, as detailed in a separate chapter.
