Question: Bodhisattvas on the bhūmis do not take a portion-and-section body; by what karma do they receive the retribution of the ten kings described in various places? The Western masters themselves have two explanations. One says: Bodhisattvas on the bhūmis all receive alteration-[bodies]; hence the bodies of the ten kings they receive are all transformation bodies. Were it not so, in the ten places they would not see the kings, because the subtle alteration-body is not their realm of experience. Another says: There is a treatise master named Vinītaprabha who, relying on the *Saṃdhinirmocana*, states as follows: The royal bodies manifested from the eighth bhūmi and above are exclusively transformations; before the seventh bhūmi, they intentionally give rise to afflictions to assist karma of the three realms and take portion-and-section bodies. These then are real bodies receiving the retribution of the ten kings, so there is no fault.
