Exposition: Third, explaining those capable of protecting. According to the Benji (Root Record), the spirits of the one hundred divisions originate from the doctrine of the Golden-Eyed Sage (Kanāda / Suvarṇākṣa). This sage commanded ghosts and spirits, which fundamentally had ten classes; unfolding these ten makes one hundred. The ten are: 1. Great spirit, who can transform all spirits. 2. Youth spirit, who is the son of Maheśvara; at night he entered the sage's gem. The rule of the sage was not to kill young boys; the sage prophesied that when he reached the age of sixteen and became a great sage, he would surely die. Since the words were not empty, this could not be avoided. Maheśvara thereupon arrested this boy permanently at the age of fourteen and took young boys as his retinue, which is why he harms the young boys of the world; if he were fifteen years old, this boy would harm them no more. 3. Mother spirit, who is the wet-nurse of the youth. 4. Brahmā spirit, who is Maheśvara; on his face are three eyes, possessing omniscience. If a lost object cannot be found, the master recites an incantation, another eye grows on the youth's face, he goes straight to retrieve the object, and once found, he loses the eye again. 5. Household-head spirit, who obstructs all vows so that good and bad undertakings do not succeed. 6. Nāga spirit, who has great greed and wrath. 7. Asura spirit, who can bind and strike humans, gods, and so forth; moreover, he has two champions, a bad champion and a good champion. 8. Sand spirit, who eats flesh, has meager merit, and whose body is like sand and earth. 9. Yakṣa spirit, who possesses great supernatural powers. 10. Rākṣasa spirit, translated as 'extremely difficult' (to be investigated).
