Explanation: Second, analyzing the elimination of obstacles. Through cultivating loving-kindness, one is able to eliminate the afflictions of ill-will and so forth of the three realms. However, with regard to the affliction of ill-will, the various schools differ. According to the Sarvāstivāda, it exists only in the desire realm. According to the Sautrāntika school, ill-will extends across the three realms. According to the Mahāyāna school, the *Yogācārabhūmi* and others state that it is the same as the Sarvāstivāda. Now relying on this sūtra, it is the same as the Sautrāntika teaching. Or perhaps this sūtra is an adaptable teaching (pravartana-nyāya-dvāra). Or perhaps this text's words are general while its intent is specific: meaning that among the three existences, the desire realm has ill-will, hence it says 'three existences'; ill-will and so forth, in reality, do not extend to the higher realms.
