3.307

釋曰：第三、釋出苦道無畏。亦有二事：一執跡生疑。謂外難言：以諸聖道，不能盡苦。見阿羅漢，蛇蜇等苦，似不盡故。二自唱德號。謂諸羅漢斷未來苦，故言斷苦，非謂現苦無故說斷。

Explanation: Third, explaining the fearlessness of the path of escape from suffering. There are also two points: first, clinging to traces and giving rise to doubts. This refers to external objections saying: through the noble paths, suffering cannot be exhausted, because arhats are seen to undergo sufferings such as snakebites, seemingly not exhausted. Second, proclaiming one's own virtuous title. It means that the arhats have severed future suffering, hence it is said that suffering is severed, not that it is said to be severed because present suffering is absent.
