The explanation says: Second, praising the names to encourage upholding. The text has two distinct parts: first, praising the names as extraordinary; later, encouraging the king to uphold and make offerings to it. This is the first. However, regarding these eight names, various explanations differ. One says: Among the eight, the first reveals true-mark prajñā, because it is the essence of the mental spirit of all ordinary beings and sages. The second illuminates contemplative prajñā, because it gives rise to the mind of wisdom and understanding in all kings. The latter six distinguish written prajñā as possessing six superior causes, because it protects the realm. Another says: Because this can serve as the reliance for ordinary beings and sages, it is named "Spirit-Origin"; because it can generate royal rank, it is compared to "Parents"; because it can protect physical life, it is compared to a "Divine Talisman"; because it can cure demonic obstacles, it is named the "Ghost-Repelling Jewel"; because it can fulfill all wishes, it is named the "Wish-Fulfilling Jewel"; because it makes the state secure, it is named the "State-Protecting Jewel"; because it clearly reveals cause and effect, it is named the "Heaven-and-Earth Mirror"; because it is the most supreme among phenomena with inconceivable power, it is named the "Dragon-Jewel Spirit King." The Original Record says: "The six consciousnesses are called mind (hsin), the seventh is called consciousness (shih), and the eighth is called spirit (shen). This sūtra can serve as the reliance for the eight consciousnesses of ordinary beings and sages, hence it is called 'Origin'. It can generate mundane and supramundane kings, hence it is compared to 'Parents'. Non-Buddhists and demon kings cannot subdue it, hence the metaphor of the 'Divine Talisman'. It can eliminate the five kinds of fear such as lack of livelihood, hence named the 'Ghost-Repelling Jewel'. It can embrace and benefit sentient beings, hence named the 'Wish-Fulfilling Jewel'. It can subdue the seven calamities, hence named the 'State-Protecting Jewel'. It can clearly reveal what is known, hence named the 'Heaven-and-Earth Mirror'. Prior to the path and subsequent to the path, it is pure and without difference, hence named the 'Dragon-Jewel Spirit King'." The extensive explanation is as stated there.
