Explanation: Second, explaining the ten totalities. Earth, water, fire, wind, blue, yellow, red, white, the sphere of space, and the sphere of consciousness are called the ten totalities (daśa kṛtsnāyatanāni), also known as the ten total absorptions (daśa sarvatrāyatanāni). That is, the focal object of the sphere is broad and expansive, devoid of any gaps; therefore they are called 'totalities'. 'Mental aspects' (ākāra) are the cognitive aspects of the ten total absorptions. The word 'unused' is used for syntactic flow. As to why the eight liberations are not mentioned: these three categories of dharmas are contemplations for persons of lower, middling, and superior faculties. Here, there are only those of middling and superior faculties and none of lower faculties, which is why they are not discussed.
