3.59

釋曰：第二、依順別理以明能護。文別有二：初正說護法、後「爾時」下聞法獲益。前中有二：初長行發起、後舉頌正釋。此即於百座中，第一法師將說八頌。依《賢愚經》道士說者，譯家別故。

Commentary: Second, clarifying the ability to protect by relying on and according with particular principles. The text falls into two parts: first, the actual exposition of the protective Dharma; later, from "at that time" down, hearing the Dharma and obtaining benefit. In the former, there are two parts: first, the prose instigation; later, presenting the verses to explain correctly. This means that among the one hundred seats, the first Dharma master is about to speak eight verses. That the Damamūka-nidāna-sūtra says a seeker of the Way spoke them is due to the differences among translators.
