Commentary: Second, the explanation of the stage of Freedom from Defilement. The text again has five [parts]: 1. 'Within a thousand buddha lands' is the extent of the lands inhabited. 2. 'Becoming a king of the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven' assigns the royal position of retribution. As for 'Trāyastriṃśa Heaven', this is an erroneous abbreviation of the Sanskrit; in full it should be said as dī-lì-nà (here translated as 'three') chéng-léng-guàn (here translated as 'thirty') tí-pó (here translated as 'heaven'). The Tripiṭaka Master Ratnacinta says: 'It corresponds to this Thirty-Three Heavens.' 3. 'Cultivating a thousand teachings' reveals the teachings practiced. That is, within each of the ten minds of faith, one additionally cultivates a hundred minds; hence it is named 'a thousand teachings.' The subsequent gradual increase in cultivation should be known by analogy to this, as extensively explained in the second fascicle of the Yingluo jing. 4. 'The ten wholesome paths' explains the distinctive practice of the bhūmi: cultivating the ten wholesome karmas because it is the stage of practicing morality. 5. 'Transforming all sentient beings' reveals the common activity of the bhūmis.
