In intending to explain this chapter, there are briefly two points: first, explaining the chapter title; second, directly explaining the text. When bodhisattvas transform sentient beings, demonstrating goodness to the assembly is called 'teaching' (jiao); causing them to change from evil is 'transformation' (hua). The meaning of 'chapter' is as above. Or it may be that teaching the assembly to depart from evil and transforming them to abide in goodness is why it is called 'Teaching and Transformation'. According to the Former Record: 'The main theme of this chapter is to explain the stages in which bodhisattvas attain emptiness; it should be called the Chapter on the Five Patiences. Yet calling it the Chapter on Teaching and Transformation has two meanings: first, bodhisattvas of the five patiences gather and transform sentient beings; second, the Tathāgata uses the teaching of the five patiences to teach and transform the kings. Therefore it is called the Chapter on Teaching and Transformation.'
