Commentary: Second, the World-Honoured One directly answers. The text is divided into two parts: first, the World-Honoured One briefly answers; second, from 'seven buddhas' onward, he extensively explains the previous dilemma. In the brief answer there are three parts: first, praising the question as having a cause; next, briefly showing the direction of the meaning; finally, encouraging the generation of the three kinds of wisdom. This is the first part. It means that the king previously inquired of the past seven buddhas, and therefore he is now able to ask about the meaning of one and two. Regarding the past seven buddhas: before Vipaśyin Buddha, another buddha is spoken of, followed in order by the second, Vipaśyin; the third, Śikhin; the fourth, Viśvabhū; the fifth, Krakucchanda; the sixth, Kanakamuni; the seventh, Kāśyapa (to be verified). Another explanation: Vipaśyin is the first and Śākyamuni is the seventh; speaking in terms of the majority, they are called the past seven buddhas; in reality, the single buddha Śākyamuni is the present.
