Explanation: Fourth, the limits of gathering and transforming. The text has two parts: first, stating the principle and briefly explaining it; second, expanding the explanation according to the principle. This is the first part: it states that all sentient beings, both the transformer and the transformed, do not leave the three realms. Great compassion is the instrument of transformation; sentient beings are the objective realm of transformation; and sarvajña is the essence of transformation. Great compassion is of three kinds: first, conditioned by sentient beings; second, conditioned by phenomena; third, unconditioned. The first is shared with non-Buddhists; the second is shared with the two vehicles; the last belongs exclusively to buddhas and bodhisattvas. For a full differentiation, see the Dazhidulun, fascicle twenty-three, and the Fodilun, fascicle five, etc. Now the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, through the power of great compassion transforms all sentient beings, mounting all-knowledge to come and transform the three realms.
