The explanation says: Fifth, the distinction between the equal and the unequalled. Alternatively, it is the distinction between the uninterrupted [path] and [the path of] liberation. The text has three distinct parts: first, the statement in terms of phenomena; next, a simile; and finally, the application. This is the statement in terms of phenomena. It means that entering the vajra-samādhi that exhausts the principle is pure and undefiled, identical with the limit of suchness subsequent to the path, and equal to the suchness of the nature of phenomena prior to the path. The statement "yet not able to be equal to the unequalled" means that because those below cannot reach the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, he is called "unequalled." Being on par with all buddhas, he is called "equal." Nothing up to the vajra-[like stage] can equal him, who is "equal to the unequalled."
