Explanation: This praises the practice of expedient means. Bodhisattvas on this bhūmi cultivate the contemplation of the truths, and perform crafts and arts to benefit sattvas. The Abhidharmakośabhāṣya states: 'The mind that initiates crafts is only the mental consciousness. The bases for executing crafts are of two kinds: first, bodily crafts, which take the four sense fields as their intrinsic nature; second, verbal crafts, which take the five sense fields as their intrinsic nature.' Regarding 'arts,' it refers to skilled occupations. Crafts and arts surpassing the world are all for the sake of drawing in and guiding all sentient beings. As the Avataṃsaka says: 'For the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, there are no worldly arts that the bodhisattva on this bhūmi does not master: namely, he thoroughly understands writing, mathematics, painting, seals, and the various treatises on earth, water, fire, and wind. He fully penetrates all of them, so that he cannot even be swayed by worldly wholesome roots.' Next, the sixth bhūmi: what is its meaning?
