The commentary explains: As for "There was also the transformation and manifestation of the pure lands of the ten directions", "transformation" means altering and changing, concealing the defiled and showing the pure. Because the substance of the land originally exists, it receives the name "transformation". "Manifestation" means transformational appearance, suddenly existing where there was none. Because the flower seats did not originally exist, they are called "transformationally manifested". The persons capable of transforming are only buddhas and bodhisattvas; the lands transformed consist of the pure and sublime four sense data, extensively adorned and pervading the ten directions. This is precisely what is spoken of in chapter thirty-seven of the *Yogācāra*: the four kinds of transformation, namely manifestation, alteration, mastery of action, and bestowing peace and happiness. As for "and the manifestation of ten billion", in the conventional counting of this land, numbers increase tenfold by tenfold; ten times ten-thousand is a hundred-thousand (*yi*), and here there are ten billion, which corresponds to one hundred *lakṣas* in the Western land. As for "lion thrones", a seat upon which a buddha sits to preach the Dharma is called a lion throne. From here, the second part manifests the ability to preach the Dharma. What is its meaning?
