Exposition: 'Śrāvastī' is an abbreviation; fully it should be *Śrāvastikā* [Śrāvastī], which here is translated as 'Abundant Virtues', having four aspects: 1. Abundance of wealth and jewels; 2. Wondrous sense-objects of desire; 3. Abundance of much learning; 4. Abundance of liberation. This Śrāvastī is the name of the capital city of the kingdom of Kośala in Central India. According to the *Xiyu ji*, there are both Northern and Southern Kośalas; to differentiate it from the southern kingdom, both [the city and kingdom] are mentioned together. As for King Prasenajit, as the *Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra* says: 'Prasenajit is translated here as harmonious and pleasing.' Having seen the wondrous portent, he reflected thus: 'Now that the Buddha manifests this rare sign, he will certainly preach the great Dharma rain: How may we kings protect our states? The Tathāgata with great compassion universally wishes to benefit and gladden [all].' The origin of the entire scripture arose from this. Hereafter follows the third part, questioning the assembled congregation.
