Regarding explicating the root text: first the overall structural division is made, and afterwards the sūtra is explained following the text. Paramārtha's notes analyse and explain this sūtra by dividing it broadly into four parts: first, the section on initiation, which is the initial "Preface Chapter"; second, the section on the main teaching, meaning the following five chapters; third, the section on the kings obtaining state protection, which is the seventh chapter; fourth, the section on propagation, which is the "Entrustment Chapter". In the past, Dharma Master Dao'an of the Jin dynasty divided various sūtras into three parts: the preface section, the main body section, and the propagation section. Therefore down to the present Great Tang, when the Ci'en Tripiṭaka Master translated the Buddhabhūmi-śāstra, Bodhisattva Bandhuprabha's commentary on the Buddhabhūmi Sūtra also divided that sūtra into three parts. Thus, although the Eastern Lands (China) and Western Heavens (India) are distant and wide apart, the minds of the sages secretly coincide and their profound intentions mysteriously accord. Now dividing this sūtra, we rely on those three sections: first, the section on the causes and conditions for the arising of the teaching, which is the initial "Preface Chapter"; second, the section on what is preached by the holy teaching, the following six chapters; third, the section on practicing and upholding according to the teaching, meaning the "Entrustment Chapter".
