The commentary explains: 'Who protect the practices of the ten bhūmis' recapitulates the previous question. 'Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas' identifies the persons capable of protecting. Those who have not yet cultivated and those who have already cultivated are both marked in the question. From 'How should' down, he directly presents three questions. The intended questions are: How should those who set out to cultivate the Great Vehicle cultivate their practice? If they cultivate practice, how should they transform and benefit [others]? Whether cultivating or transforming, how should they contemplate so as to be free from hindrances and reach the perfection of the virtues of the fruit? Precisely because they seek the unexcelled virtues of the fruit, uninterrupted from beginning to end, these three questions are raised without addition or subtraction. Moreover, these three questions are precisely the three kinds of wondrous contemplation for those who arouse the aspiration to seek bodhi: revulsion toward conditioned phenomena, joyous pursuit of bodhi, and compassionate pity for sentient beings. This is the sequence of arising for these three minds, since severing, cultivating, transforming, and benefiting are not yet at their initial stage. They may also be named the three clusters of pure precepts: the precepts of gathering wholesome dharmas, the precepts of gathering sentient beings, and the precepts of restraining discipline. This is the sequence of rectifying and severing, cultivating practice, transforming and benefiting, and staying far from all hindrances, which accords with the three questions. These are the causes of the three virtues of wisdom, grace, and severance, which correspondingly enable one to attain the ultimate fruits of the saṃbhogakāya, nirmāṇakāya, and dharmakāya. From here is the second [part]: explaining the Buddha's specific answers. This is broadly divided into three: 1. explaining the answer regarding cultivating practice; 2. explaining the answer regarding transforming sentient beings; 3. explaining the answer regarding contemplation. Concerning the first, cultivating practice, the text is divided into two: first, briefly explaining the five kṣāntis; later, broadly explaining the five kṣāntis. In the brief explanation, the text is again divided into three: first, a general indication of the five kṣāntis.
