解曰：伏忍位者，五忍之中伏忍居首，伏忍之內三中最初創入僧祇，故云初也。伏謂折伏，忍義如前。位者位次，此下忍也。起習種性者，起謂生起，超前十善入忍位也。習者修習。言種性者，順理相應，為後勝因，故得名種。現種熏習，習成性故。修十住行者，此經略標，不列住名。如《華嚴經．十住品》云「所謂發心住、治地住、修行住、生貴住、具足方便住、正心住、不退住、童真住、王子住、灌頂住。」辯住行相，至下悉矣。從此第二正辯修行。於中有四：且初第一明發心相。

The commentary explains: As for 'the stage of suppressing kṣānti', suppressing kṣānti ranks first among the five kṣāntis; and of the three [lineages] within suppressing kṣānti, it is the very first entry into an asaṃkhyeya [kalpa]; hence it is called 'initial'. 'Suppressing' means to bend and suppress; the meaning of 'kṣānti' is as before. 'Stage' means the ranking in stages; this is the lower [grade of] kṣānti. As for 'generating the acquired lineage': 'generating' means bringing into being, transcending the preceding ten goods and entering the stage of kṣānti. 'Acquired' means practicing. As for 'lineage' (gotra): it accords with principle and is compatible [with it], serving as an excellent cause for what comes after, and so it obtains the name 'seed' (bīja). Current seeds undergo perfuming, and practice develops into a nature (prakṛti/gotra). As for 'practicing the practices of the ten abodes': this sūtra marks them briefly without listing their names. As the 'Chapter on the Ten Abodes' in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: 'Namely, the abode of the initial generation of the thought [of awakening], the abode of preparing the ground, the abode of practice, the abode of noble birth, the abode of endowed skillful means, the abode of the upright mind, the abode of non-retrogression, the abode of the innocent child, the abode of the prince, and the abode of coronation.' The distinctive characteristics of the practices of the abodes will be fully explained below. Next is the second [section], which correctly elucidates the cultivation of practice. In this there are four parts; first is the first, explaining the marks of generating the thought [of awakening].
