As for 'bodhisattva', it refers to a bodhisattva of the ten practices. As the 'Chapter on the Ten Practices' in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra states: 'Namely, joyful practice, beneficial practice, non-opposing practice, unyielding practice, practice free from delusion and confusion, well-manifested practice, unattached practice, difficult-to-attain practice, good-dharma practice, and true practice.' As for 'practices the ten kinds of pāramitās', these are the practices of the ten perfections. A bodhisattva of the ten practices cultivates one practice for each, which are the ten perfections. How are they cultivated? Practices such as giving are called pāramitās. The Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra says: 'Only when embraced by the seven supremes can a pāramitā be established: first, supreme abiding, meaning one must abide in the bodhisattva lineage; second, supreme reliance, meaning one must rely on the great bodhicitta; third, supreme inclination, meaning one must have compassion for all sattvas; fourth, supreme enterprise, meaning one must completely carry out all enterprises; fifth, supreme skillful means, meaning one must be embraced by signless cognition; sixth, supreme dedication, meaning one must dedicate toward anuttarasamyaksaṃbodhi; seventh, supreme purity, meaning one must not be admixed with the two hindrances. If not embraced by these seven, the practices cultivated are merely called giving and so forth, not reaching the other shore.' Bodhisattvas in this stage practice based on similitude; the practices carried out upon ascending the bhūmis all reach the other shore. Next is the second [part], correctly explaining the cultivation of practice. In this there are three parts: first, marking the ten remedies; second, correctly explaining the remedies; third, the extent of benefiting beings. First is the first, marking the ten remedies.
