Exposition: Above, the word "remedy" encompasses both that which remedies and that which is remedied. "Greed, anger," and so forth are that which is remedied. That is to say, based on mental consciousness, lust increases in accordance with pleasing objects, anger increases in accordance with displeasing objects, and ignorance increases in accordance with neutral objects; through these three acting as unwholesome roots, pride and so forth as well as the secondary afflictions arise everywhere. If these three are suppressed, the rest are suppressed accordingly. "Give rise to loving-kindness," and so forth, are the practices that can remedy [them]. "Giving" means non-greed, because of relinquishing wealth and Dharma. "Loving-kindness" means non-anger, because of giving happiness to others. "Wisdom" arises from non-delusion, which is correct wisdom. Because these three serve as wholesome roots, they universally give rise to the myriad practices and all virtues. Third from here is the remedying of the three periods of time.
