Commentary: What a bodhisattva cultivates must be equipped with the myriad practices; the great vows made are these four. Regarding 'severing all entanglements and hindrances': because of afflictions, they entangle and bind sentient beings; because of the knowable [obstacles], they cover over supreme wisdom so that it cannot become manifest. Or else it refers to the ten entanglements and five hindrances, and the two kinds of delusion of seeing and cultivation—classified as usual according to what is appropriate—which explains what is severed. Regarding 'constantly transforming sentient beings': [it refers to] all sentient beings of the two realms and the four forms of birth, explaining constant transformation. Regarding 'cultivating the vision and knowledge of the buddhas': all the wonderful practices of the buddhas, the World-Honoured Ones, numerous as the sands of the Ganges, are completely cultivated, explaining constant cultivation. Regarding 'attaining unsurpassable awakening': this means that on this first bhūmi one will realize the unsurpassable correct awakening of all Tathāgatas, explaining what will be realized. The first and the last are for one's own benefit; the middle two are for benefiting others; they pervade cause and fruit, because they are never severed or exhausted. According to the Avataṃsaka Sūtra, regarding the cultivation of vows, in the stages of the worthy vows are dominant, while in the stage of the noble [practices and vows] are conjoined. Hereafter, the fourth [section] explains the three gates of liberation.
