The commentary states: Regarding the word jie (verse), there are three explanations. First: jie means "exhaustion" (jie), because it exhausts and collects the meanings. Second: jie means "rest" (qi), because the speech rests. Third: in Sanskrit it is gāthā, translated here as chanting; ancient translators of sūtras went as far as [transliterating] jie-ta, and omitting the syllable ta, named it simply jie, which is a corrupt abbreviation. From here, the second part directly clarifies the verses of praise. There are thirty lines in total, divided into three parts: first, three lines praise the Buddha's three virtues; next, twenty-six and a half lines extensively praise the five kṣāntis; finally, half a line concludes with praise and reverent homage. First, praising the three virtues, in which there are three parts: first, praising the virtues of the three karmas; second, praising the excellence of those who are receptive; third, praising the profundity of what is taught. First, praising the virtues of the three karmas.
