The commentary states: "Emptiness of dispersal" means that releasing, abandoning, and relinquishing can be apprehended; this dispersal is empty through dispersal. That sūtra next states "emptiness of non-alteration," meaning that no releasing, abandoning, or relinquishing can be apprehended; this non-alteration is empty through non-alteration. The former is being and the latter is non-being, mutually correlated in their characteristics. Although it is missing here, its meaning is implicitly correlated. As for "emptiness of intrinsic nature," it refers to the intrinsic nature of all phenomena: whether the nature of conditioned phenomena or the nature of unconditioned phenomena, none are made by śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas, or tathāgatas, nor are they made by anything else; this intrinsic nature is empty through intrinsic nature. As for "emptiness of specific characteristics," it refers to the specific characteristics of all phenomena: such as resistance being the specific characteristic of form, experiencing being the specific characteristic of feeling, grasping marks being the specific characteristic of perception, constructing being the specific characteristic of karmic formations, and discerning being the specific characteristic of consciousness. Specific characteristics like these, whether of conditioned phenomena or unconditioned phenomena, are empty of specific characteristics. As for "emptiness of all phenomena," it refers to the five aggregates, twelve sense fields, and eighteen realms, whether phenomena with form or formless, visible or invisible, resistant or non-resistant, with outflows or outflowless, conditioned or unconditioned; all these phenomena are empty through all phenomena. Next is the sixth [part], clarifying the emptiness of cause and fruition.
