Exposition: 'Sentient beings' excludes the insentient five aggregates. 'Sensation' is the general name of the sensation aggregate. If distinguished, it is a distinct experiencing, hence called 'the sensation of [sentient beings]'; its substance is a mental factor. As sensation among the omnipresent [mental factors], it is the designated dharmas of the five aggregates. The designation of sensation and the aggregate of sensation differ as general and specific; these two are distinct. 'Established on the basis of convention': the two characters 'convention' (saṃvṛti) will be explained in order below, clarifying that it is unreal. From this point, the second [part clarifies] the active characteristics of sensation. Within it, there are two parts: first, sensation creating karma.
