Exposition: "Letters are by nature detached and without the marks of letters" clarifies the teaching that expresses. "Letters" express. Because all dharmas are devoid of self-nature, it is said that "they are by nature detached." Because they are by nature detached, they are without marks. Therefore the Vimalakīrti Sūtra says: "The nature of letters being detached is itself liberation." "Neither dharma" is because letters are empty. "Nor non-dharma" is because what is expressed, detached from marks, is not non-existent in substance. Furthermore, "neither dharma" means that the principle and cognition that are expressed do not have existent marks. "Nor non-dharma" means that it is what is cultivated and realized, not like a rabbit's horn, and is not a non-existent dharma. Because both the teaching and the principle are free from the two extremes, they are supreme. Next is the fourth: the supremacy of wisdom. This is divided into three: first, clarifying that prajñā is empty.
