Exposition: Adducing the emptiness of that which is relied upon reveals the emptiness of that which relies upon it. "In the ten bhūmis": [the stages] like Joyful and so forth serve as support and cause growth, and are therefore called bhūmi (ground). From "initial arising" onward clarifies the emptiness of the ten bhūmis. Each single bhūmi possesses three: taking the first bhūmi as an example, the initial path of seeing is called initial arising; when one cultivates superior practices in the first bhūmi for a long time, it is called abiding arising; and when the first bhūmi is about to be completed and one advances to seek the subsequent bhūmi, the final mind is called final arising. That is, entering, abiding, and concluding constitute the three. The remaining nine follow this pattern, making thirty. Although in the latter three bhūmis there is no separate exertion, their spontaneous application also has these three. "All are empty": in general the ten bhūmis and in particular the thirty arisings—both that which relies and that which is relied upon in this causal stage are entirely empty. Next is the second: clarifying that the buddha-fruit is empty.
