Question: In the older sūtra, the scattered [flowers] were called 'flowers of practice' and so forth, but here they are called 'jewelled lotus flowers' and so forth. Are these seasonal flowers of the water and land, or not? Answer: As stated in Chapter 84, 'Scattering Flowers', of the *Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra*: At that time, Śakra, Lord of the Devas, and all the gods of the Four Great Kings' realm up to the Akaniṣṭha Heaven in this trichiliocosm all had this thought: 'The Venerable Subhūti, relying on the Buddha's spiritual power, is raining the great rain of the Dharma for all sentient beings. We should now each magically create wondrous celestial flowers to offer and scatter over Śākyamuni Tathāgata, the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, and the saṅgha of bhikṣus. The Venerable Subhūti also scatters the profound prajñāpāramitā that he preaches as an offering.' When the heavenly hosts had formed this thought, each magically created various subtle and fragrant flowers to offer and scatter over the Tathāgata and the bodhisattvas. At that time, in this buddha-world of the trichiliocosm, the flowers were completely filled. By the Buddha's spiritual power, they joined in the empty space to form a floral terrace, magnificently adorned and wondrous, pervading and covering the trichiliocosm. Subhūti, having seen this, had this thought: 'The flowers now scattered have never been seen in the heavenly abodes. These flowers are wondrous and certainly not grown from plants, trees, water, or land; they must be magically produced from the minds of the devas for the sake of making offerings.' At that time, Śakra, knowing Subhūti's thought, said to Subhūti: 'These scattered flowers are truly not grown from plants, trees, water, or land, nor are they truly capable of being magically produced from the mind; they are merely transformed manifestations.' The Venerable Subhūti said to Śakra: 'If these flowers are unarisen, then they are not flowers.' Śakra asked: 'Is it only that these flowers are unarisen, or is it so for the remaining phenomena as well?' Subhūti answered: 'Not only are these flowers unarisen; all other phenomena are also like this. The skandhas, āyatanas, and dhātus, the four truths, the twelve links of dependent origination, the six pāramitās, the four means of embracing, and all wholesome phenomena throughout are all completely unarisen; they are all identical to the flowers.' Whether scattered earlier by humans or celestials, the principle of prajñā is identical; by the standards of the older sūtra, the meaning is identical to that. Next is the third [part]: raining down flowers as an offering.
