解曰：習忍以前者，明劫外也。經十千劫者，所經時也。此明直往，不同《涅槃》八萬六萬四萬二萬十千劫等，此頓彼漸，有差別故。行十善行者，所行行也，身三、口四、意三為十。有退有進者，明不定矣。從此第二舉喻釋成。

The commentary explains: "Prior to the kṣānti of practice" clarifies [the time] outside the kalpas. "Passing through ten thousand kalpas" is the time traversed. This clarifies those who proceed directly, which is not like the eighty thousand, sixty thousand, forty thousand, twenty thousand, and ten thousand kalpas in the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], because here it is sudden while there it is gradual, and thus there is a distinction. "Practising the ten virtuous deeds" is the practice performed: the three of body, four of speech, and three of mind make ten. "With regress and progress" clarifies that they are indeterminate. From here, the second part presents a simile to explain and substantiate [it].
