The commentary explains: "Ten wisdom contemplations" are precisely the ten practices. Wisdom is the contemplating mind among the specific mental factors (viniyata), which cultivates the ten superior practices such as giving. Now, as for the "ten practices," they are called "practices" because giving, morality, and so on are cultivated and aroused. Because the dharmas of practice are complete, they are spoken of as ten. Generally called the "ten practices," they derive their name from the number. They are the practices of practice, because self and other differ. As for their distinct names: when called giving and so forth, the name manifests from the intrinsic essence; when called joy and so forth, the designations are based on function, revealing the essence and distinguishing the persons, like the abidings above. From here, the second part distinctively clarifies the ten practices. The text is divided into ten: first, clarifying the practice of joy.
